Best AI ad generator for small businesses: free and paid tools compared

How to create ads with AI: free options in ChatGPT, Gemini and Canva compared with AdCreative.ai, Creatify and Pencil on price, trial, credits and the catch in the terms.

Updated 2 Nov 2026

An AI ad generator turns your product, logo and a short brief into ad drafts: banners in many sizes, product photos, short videos and ad copy. Some of that you can do for free in ChatGPT, Gemini or Canva. A specialised tool such as AdCreative.ai is built for teams that need dozens of sizes and variations every month. This guide walks through one job — a product ad for Instagram, Facebook and Google Display — and compares both routes on price, trial, credits and the catch in the terms. Prices come from each vendor’s own pages as of 2 November 2026. We compared published prices, features and terms; we did not run paid campaigns or judge the quality of the ads.

What is the best AI ad generator?

There is no single best one; it depends on how many ads you make. Our picks by use case, based on published prices, features and terms:

  • One or two ads a month: an AI chat such as ChatGPT or Gemini for the image and the copy, then a design tool such as Canva for text and sizes. Free plans exist, but their limits change often, so check them first.
  • Video ads with AI presenters: Creatify. A free plan with 10 credits a month — up to 2 video ads or 20 image ads — and paid plans from $10 a month billed yearly.
  • Many sizes and variations for several campaigns or brands: AdCreative.ai. Banners, product photoshoots, video ads and copy in one subscription; Starter from $20 a month billed yearly for 20 credits, Professional from $125 for 300 credits. The 7-day trial needs a card and renews automatically.
  • Static and video ads on a small budget: Pencil, from $11 a month billed yearly for 50 generations.

What does an AI ad generator do?

It takes three inputs — your website or product page, your brand assets (logo, colours, fonts) and a goal such as “sell the summer collection” — and returns drafts:

  • Banners and social ads in the sizes each platform wants, for example square and portrait for feeds and 9:16 for Stories and Reels.
  • Product photos: your product placed in a generated scene, so you do not need a photo shoot for every season.
  • Short video ads, from animated banners to clips with AI presenters.
  • Headlines and ad copy in several variations for testing.
  • A score or prediction of which draft will perform best. Treat it as a hint: only an A/B test in your own ad account tells you which ad wins.

How to create ads with AI for free

  1. Write the brief in two sentences. Product, audience, the one benefit and the offer: “Waterproof hiking backpack, 25 litres, for weekend hikers. Free shipping this week.”
  2. Generate the product scene in an AI chat. Upload a clean product photo and ask for a background, not a new product: “Keep the backpack exactly as in the photo. Place it on a rock at a mountain lake, morning light, no text in the image.”
  3. Ask for copy separately. Three headlines under 40 characters and two primary texts under 125 characters, with no claims you cannot prove.
  4. Add text and logo in a design tool. Image generators often get text inside images wrong, so put the headline, price and logo on afterwards.
  5. Make the sizes. At least 1:1 and 4:5 for feeds and 9:16 for Stories. Automatic resizing is often a paid feature; on a free plan you may have to rebuild each size.
  6. Check before you upload. Is the product unchanged? Is every claim true? Is the text clear of the edges in Stories?

This works for a few ads. It gets slow when you need ten variations in several sizes every week: then most of the time goes into steps 4 and 5.

One product, six ad sizes, new variations every week. By hand, that takes hours.

AdCreative.ai creates banners, product photos and short video ads from your brand. Here is how to test it without surprises.

Step one: start the seven-day free trial. It needs a card and turns into a paid plan automatically. Set a reminder for day five.

Step two: enter your website. AdCreative.ai imports your logo, colours and fonts. Check them before you generate anything.

Step three: brief one campaign. The product, the audience, one benefit and the offer. Upload a real product photo.

You get drafts in several sizes, each with a score. The score is a prediction, not a result. Check the product, the price and every claim.

Step four: test two variants with the same budget in your ad account, and keep the winner. Unused credits expire each month, so choose a plan that fits your real volume.

Prices, free alternatives and the full guide are on bto.ai

  1. Start the trial. Sign up at AdCreative.ai (affiliate link). The trial runs 7 days with 20 credits and Pro features. It needs a card and renews automatically. Note which plan and price checkout shows, and put a reminder in your calendar for day 5.
  2. Set up your brand. Enter your website; AdCreative.ai imports logo, colours and fonts. Check them, especially the logo on light and dark backgrounds.
  3. Brief one campaign. Product, audience, offer and the platform. Upload a real product photo for product ads.
  4. Generate and pick. Pick two or three drafts that differ in one thing — image, headline or offer — so a test tells you something.
  5. Check every draft before you download it. Product shown correctly, prices and claims true, no invented reviews or badges, text readable on a phone. Credits are used to generate or download; the help centre does not say how many per format, so watch your balance during the trial.
  6. Test in your ad account. The creative score is a prediction. Run the variants against each other with the same budget and keep the winner.
  7. Decide before the trial ends. If you keep it, choose the plan for your real monthly volume — unused credits expire. If not, cancel under Settings › Account › Cancel My Subscription and keep the confirmation.

What does an AI ad generator cost?

  • AI chats and design tools: free plans with limits, or the plans you already pay for. Your time is the price: sizes and text by hand.
  • AdCreative.ai: Starter $39 a month, $29 billed quarterly or $20 billed yearly ($240 in advance), for 20 credits and one brand. Professional $249, $185 or $125 a month for 300 credits. Ultimate $999, $749 or $500 a month. The terms grant no right of withdrawal, so a yearly plan is a 12-month commitment.
  • Creatify: free for 10 credits a month; Standard $10 a month billed yearly ($15 monthly) for 55 credits, Pro $38 ($55) for 280.
  • Pencil: Core $11 a month billed yearly ($14 monthly) for 50 generations, Growth $44 ($55) for 250.

Credits are the hard part: each vendor counts them differently, and an image, a video and a download can cost different amounts. Why that makes plans hard to compare is in AI credits explained.

What to check before an AI ad goes live

A practical checklist, not legal advice:

  • The product must look like the product. A generated scene may change colours, logos or details. An ad that shows something the customer does not get invites complaints and returns.
  • No invented proof. Do not use generated reviews, star ratings, “bestseller” badges or countdowns that are not true.
  • People in ads. Do not present an AI-generated person as a real customer.
  • Rights. Check that you may use every image, logo, voice and likeness in the ad, including other brands’ trademarks.
  • Platform rules. Check the current advertising policies of Meta and Google for your product category before you upload. Health claims and restricted products get extra review there.
  • Your data. AdCreative.ai’s privacy policy says anonymized user data, including from connected ad accounts, is used to train its AI; consent can be withdrawn by email. Check the points in AI tools and the GDPR before you connect customer lists.

Which one should you pick?

  • Try the idea for free first: one product, an AI chat for the scene and copy, a design tool for the text. If the ad performs, you know what to scale.
  • You need video ads with presenters: start on Creatify’s free plan.
  • You produce many sizes and variations every month: AdCreative.ai, starting with the 7-day trial and a calendar reminder. Pay monthly or quarterly until you know your credit use.
  • Small budget, static and video: Pencil.
